How to Find Disaster Relief Jobs

Over the past couple of days, we have received a number of calls from people around the country looking for disaster relief jobs in the stricken areas. To accelerate the flow of volunteers and workers into these areas, we want to share three ways to find disaster relief jobs Before applying to any disaster relief jobs there is one specific point to remember: Relief agencies try to use as much local labor as possible to combat the disruption of the local jobs .

FEMA.gov: When FEMA responds to a disaster it activates response teams to help with assessment, recovery and oversee debris removal. These teams also include local and regional Citizen Emergency Response Teams (CERTS). Many cities and states have regular CERT training session for people interested in disaster response. FEMA also hires a limited amount of contract and temporary workers with specific skills directly through their website. Become part of the FEMA On Call List Here

State Emergency Management Agencies: These agencies work similar to FEMA but on a state level. They also hire contractors and temporary workers through their state agencies in certain instances. These positions are typically advertised through the state department of labor.

Charities, Churches and Relief Organizations: Believe it or not. Charities and Relief organizations do have paid temporary disaster relief jobs on certain occasions. These positions will appear on their organization's website and social media outlets. It is also possible to with these organizations as a volunteer.

Disaster Relief Jobs on Job Boards and Other Outlets

Over the next few weeks there will be many disaster relief jobs advertised through various media outlets. We advise that job seekers use appropriate caution when inquiring about these positions. Some maybe false advertising or active scams. Be sure to check out the organzations before submitting any information.

Engineering Disciplines Are Among the Fastest Growing and Well Paid Professions

According to a recent study by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) , six of the top 10 paying college degrees were in engineering disciplines. Here is an except from the NACE Study:

 "At an average starting salary of $70,400, computer engineering was the highest-paid major in 2012. Other engineering majors that were among the top 10 were chemical engineering, ($66,400, second), aerospace/aeronautical/astronautical engineering ($64,000, fourth), mechanical engineering ($62,900, fifth), electrical/electronics and communications engineering ($62,300, sixth), and civil engineering ($57,600, seventh). " 

If you search through many of the open positions on major job boards you will see a large number of engineering positions. One major issue that parents have with introducing their children to science and math based professions is : "How can I share this information with my child if I am not good in math and science myself?"

How Engineers Week Can Help You Introduce Your Child To The Engineering Profession.

Local colleges. museums and professional organizations like the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Society of Women Engineers (SWE) have special Engineers Week events scheduled that can help parents show their children some of the great contributions engineers have made to our world. Please check your local paper, online community event calendar or the organization's website for more information.

Take some time out this weekend and show your child some engineering wonders. You will have a positive effect on their future.
