The 8 Must Read Articles On Environmental Jobs in 2012

Job Information Please?

Let’s say agree that 2012 has been a little better year for finding a job. However,  there are still large numbers of people out of the workforce who want and need information about job opportunities.  What I have found through my interactions with job seekers is many lack information about job and training opportunities available in the marketplace. These articles contain some of the information job seekers need to find  environmental job opportunities.

  1. Solar Energy’s “Dark Side” Comes to Light in New Environmental Jobs: This article is not intended to denigrate or politicize clean energy technology or the solar industry but to inform the public about new job opportunities. The links provided lead to important job information.
  2. 312 Billion Reasons Why Environmental Management Jobs Are Growing Fast Did you know that the environmental industry is a $312 Billion per year business sector? To most of the general public, this sector is an unknown job market unless some type of disaster strikes or if your location has a thriving energy/industrial economy. In this article we want to inform job seekers and graduates about the opportunities in this sector.
  3. Environmental Science Jobs To Boom Over Next Decade: Are You Ready? Most job seekers do not know that the growth in energy exploration and  environmental regulations will create a large number of well-paying environmental science jobs over the next decade.
  4. 4 Lessons Peyton Manning Can Teach Green & Environmental Job Seekers :Like every other NFL fan, I was sad to see Peyton Manning leave the Indianapolis Colts. It was the somber end of an era for Colts fans and a joyous beginning for his next team. As I listened to Peyton’s speech, I realized that he is now a job seeker who has to find the right team that will fit his goals and talents.  It is an odd thing to think that a multi-millionaire star athlete is looking for a job but it is true. So my thoughts turned to some lessons we could learn from this football great.
  5. Top 7 “Soft” Skills Engineering & Science Grads Need to Be Successful :To celebrate the achievements of this year’s graduates, we decided to share 7 “soft” skills that hiring managers are looking for when they consider science and engineering graduates for entry level jobs. These secrets are not in a particular order because they vary in importance to every manager.
  6. Top 17 Key Job Skills Employers Want In 2012: As follow up to my “Skill Up” article for Job Action Day 2011, I wanted to write a series of articles on job skills needed in 2012. My hope is to help job seekers overcome the “Skills Gap” and acquire the new jobs opening in energy, environmental and infrastructure.
  7. 12 Job Certifications and Licenses You Will Need In the Green Economy:In order to land the green jobs of the future, American workers will have to get new certifications, college degrees or training. The purpose of this article is show job seekers some of the credentials that will be in demand as the job market opens up.
  8. 5 Critical Skills Needed to get an Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics Job in America:America has a shortage of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professionals. Solar Energy’s “Dark Side” Comes to Light in New Environmental Jobs

This article is not intended to denigrate or politicize clean energy technology or the solar industry but to inform the public about new environmental jobs. The links provided lead to important job information.

Heavy Metals = Tough, Highly Skilled Environmental Jobs

San Francisco's CBS channel 5  in its coverage of the cleanup and decontamination of the Solyndra's facilities in California, has reported that toxic heavy metal compounds are present on the site. It is widely known that solar panel manufacturers use heavy metal materials such as Cadmium Telluride, Copper Indium Selenide,  and Gallium Arsenide . What is not discussed openly is that these highly toxic compounds require highly trained personnel and specialized equipment to remove these compounds for proper disposal. Since this article is focused on environmental jobs, let's talk about them here:

  1. Hazardous Materials Managers & Technicians: According to the Bureau of Labor (BLS) statistics the growth of jobs for hazardous materials removal workers will range from 20-28% or higher over the next decade. During a cleanup action, such as the one in California, technicians wearing protective gear (PPE) will sample all of the equipment and materials in the facility to determine what is clean and contaminated. Clean materials and equipment will be removed and disposed in the appropriate manner. Contaminated equipment and materials will dismantled, cleaned, packed and shipped to a licensed disposal facility.
  2. Environmental Engineers: Environmental engineers find ways to neutralize or minimize the toxic chemical's effect on the environment if there is some type of accidental release. This field is projected to have a growth rate over 25%.
  3. Inspectors:  Environmental Inspectors will make sure that the contaminated equipment, waste containers and the facility will be cleaned to regulations. They will also monitor the sampling, cleaning and closing procedures to make sure no corners are cut.
  4. Safety Managers: Safety managers will monitor the employees and safety equipment to make no one contracts a contamination derived illness. They will also have a key role in ensuring no contamination is released into the public.

As the solar industry continues its growth trend, there will be strong opportunities for environmental/hazardous waste professionals. It is my hope that many job seekers will explore environmental jobs to find the right opportunity for them.

3 Hottest Green, Environmental & Infrastructure Jobs for Late 2011

Thoughts from Hinton Human Capital on the Job Market

The debt crisis and new environmental regulations will have a strong effect on the green, environmental & infrastructure job market in late 2011. The top competitor for all job seekers will not be other candidates, but the economic, financial and regulatory uncertainties that face corporate management. Hiring managers will be cautious about opening new jobs unless there an immediate return on investment or a project coming in the door. Therefore, it will be important for job seekers to demonstrate that their abilities, experience and skills can fill an important void and produce an immediate positive impact on the company bottom line. Here is the summation of our thoughts for the latter part of the year.

“Hiring in the Green, Envronmental and Infrastructure job sector will continue but at a slower, more cautious pace.”

Look for a “Hard Hat Mentality” From Political Leaders

Although infrastructure is a proven method of job creation, the chance for a large scale infrastructure stimulus package in United States is remote. However, job seekers should expect a lower level ”hard hat” mentality from political leaders where they will push through infrastructure construction projects that will put thousands of people to work in a short period of time. These projects will be a direct effort to raise tax revenues; change the public psyche and create jobs.

Here are the 3 Hottest Green, Environmental & Infrastructure Jobs for Late 2011

  1. Water/Wastewater Infrastructure: There will be a slowing effect on this market because of financial issues but many of the large water projects are driven by EPA court actions and heightened regulations. Water utilities required by these consent decrees to replace old underground infrastructure to stop untreated sewer discharges into local rivers and streams. Expect the demand for engineers, construction managers and field construction workers with underground utility experience go up at certain time of the design and construction process.
  2. Recycling/Scrap Industries:  The scrap metals industry did $29 billion in exports last year and there is a good chance to repeat that amount if  commodity prices, the debt crisis and the economic outlook do not deteriorate further. Recyclers will be looking for General Managers, Sales, labor positons and Environmental Health & Safety professionals
  3. Air Quality/Pollution Controls: The EPA just finalized a regulation that will force energy utilities to install new pollution controls in old coal fired plants; convert old coal fired plants to natural gas or shut them down. These projects will need engineers, scientists, pollution control installers and inspectors to get the job done.
